Information Technology Competency Exam
All students entering the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will be required to pass an initial skills assessment of basic Information Technology (IT) competencies using the online SimNet program. This online exam will be administered to all students during New Student Orientation.
The assessment allows for the very basic IT skills to be tested. Students must pass, with a 70% or better, each of the three components before being allowed to take the required two-credit UNIV 200, Information Literacy, course. The students will be asked to demonstrate basic technology skills, as measured by the use of word processing and presentation applications (i.e. Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007); and to demonstrate the ability to use a web browser to navigate the World Wide Web and the Internet. Be assured that these are very basic and not advanced skills.
Competencies to be tested include:
Word Processing (MS Word 2007) - Create a basic document; Cut/copy/paste; Format text; Format paragraphs; Use tabs (appropriate use in place of spaces); Use headers/footers/page numbers; Use search/replace; Control a document's page setup and its overall appearance; and Use help feature.
Presentations (MS PowerPoint 2007) - Create a simple presentation; Format text; Embed image objects into a presentation; Modify objects on slides; Organize slides (drop and drag placement of slides); and Navigate slide show presentation (basics of slide forward/slide back).
World Wide Web and Internet Navigate to specific web address; Follow hyperlinks to find information; Utilize search engines to find information.
